Just Some Views... by Tatu
Disclaimer: This newsletter is just a collection
of my ramblings. It is not intended to be authoritative in any way. Just
reflections of my personal explorations. If anyone finds it interesting or
helpful for me that is a plus. I don't know it all and stay far
away from the elitists who think they do. I am no Master of anything,
just a student on a journey who loves to explore life, art, relationships
and hopefully will one day learn to at least be the Master my own soul and
the loving leader of another self empowered one who wishes to walk along
side me.
I have received a number of positive responses to my last essay "When
Is A BDSM Environment Actually a Cult?" published on April 1, 2006.
Included in these were submissive females who suddenly realized what had
been going on in their relationships and wanted to take positive steps to
get to a healthier place in their lives. I am grateful that some have found
my offering important for their future. Thank you for reading.
I've been keeping track of the volume of readership for these newsletters.
We have been getting close to 1000 unique hits a day for the first week or
so that it is published. We are thankful for your interest. I will do my
best to continue to bring material of interest to the rope and eastern school
D/s scene at least once a month. Thank you again for your support.
I have had the honor of having some online discussions in the past with
Master K about Japanese Rope Art. We have shared a number of emails back
and forth over time. He and I share a lot of things in common. We love research
and art. Especially in viewing Japanese Rope in terms of the beauty of it's
art. I hope to cross paths with him in the immediate future personally.
Master K is somewhat obscure to the public eye, so I recently put together
a formal interview, so the community could get to know him a little
better. Thank you again Sir for participating in the interview that
follows.

An Interview With Master K

Tatu: Master K, first thank you for agreeing
to do this interview for the D/s ARts Family. Let's start by finding out
a little about you. Could you give us a summary of your background, education,
special studies and specifically how you became interested in Japanese Rope?
Master K: Thank you, Jim. I'm very flattered
to be asked.
I was born in Toronto, Canada.
Like most people who realize in youth that they have a predilection for SM
I was confused as to how to express/deal with this interest. At 17 I wandered
into an erotic book shop in San Francisco and came upon two books that showed
me the way. These were a book of the artist John Willie's cartoons and a
beautiful, small, Japanese volume of shibari photographs. After looking at
these books I realized 3 important things:
a.) That my interest was shared by many people all over the world.
b.) That it need not be viewed as shameful or antisocial but could be part
of loving relationships.
c.) That it could also be art.
I became especially fascinated by the Art and culture of Japan and China
and devoted myself
to
this at University. I was fortunate to be part of a "Junior Year Abroad Program"
in Tokyo and it was there that I had my first exposure to authentic kinbaku
and the society where it is tolerated, even encouraged. A subsequent 2 month
trip after graduation resulted in my being given several rudimentary "lessons"
by a young kinbakushi, a friend of a friend, who made a small part of his
living assisting a known sensei in his work. By coincidence I met this same
individual a year later in NY when I returned to the US for my first job.
Several more lessons followed and these provided me with the basis of my
understanding of kinbaku (shibari), it's long and fascinating history and
its Art. More importantly, it provided me with several key connections,
connections I've added to over the years, which resulted in my ability to
continue to learn more and to begin my collection of kinbaku literature,
Art and audio visual materials.
Tatu: I saw your interview / article "Untying
Shibari" in LA Alternative Weekly. In fact I featured a lead to that story
in my last newsletter. There seems to be a growing awareness of shibari in
the mainstream public. Do you feel this perception is correct? Where do you
see all of this going?
Master K: I was
very surprised and pleased by the comments this interview generated. The
writer/editor did an excellent job.
I do think there is much more awareness, if not understanding, about
shibari/kinbaku in various circles lately. This is especially true in the
West. It's all very positive, in my opinion. Whenever an interesting Art
form can begin to be fully explored and another people's culture and history
better understood it's a plus for everyone.
Hopefully, they'll be even greater understanding of the positive aspects
of kinbaku, its unique artistry and its techniques in the future.
Tatu: There was also a comment made about your
article from someone who went by the name survivor, who seemed to have been
a model in the commercial BDSM world and left it and had some harsh words
for the article. She seemed to not own her own adult decisions and is stuck
in her past. Could you reflect up that post?
Master K: I saw this comment and found it touching
and very interesting. I also noted it seemed to have very little relationship
to my interview and had several factual errors. It almost looked as if it
were a pre-thought out diatribe against the commercial BDSM world and had
little to do with the Art of shibari. I was glad it was the only negative
response amongst all the others that were positive
Still, I have to say I have a lot of sympathy for the writer. She made some
very good points. The commercial fetish world can be very exploitative.
Tatu: As we have previously communicated, in
my own studies, I am somewhat frustrated with a
lot of the Internet mythology that is floating
around out there about the art of shibari. How would you advise the honest
seeker to discern the myths from reality when it comes to the art of Japanese
Rope?
Master K: I'm very sympathetic to your frustration.
It's hard to cut through the misinformation to get to the facts about the
history, Art and techniques of hojojutsu, kinbaku and the Japanese SM culture
which is quite different from our own. It's especially difficult when one
doesn't speak Japanese.
This is one of the reasons I'm doing the second book. As I said, I was amazed
at the appetite for information that my first modest book and Midori's lovely
volume on this subject uncovered.
However, the facts are out there and are pretty straightforward if you're
willing to look for them and understand.
For instance, ...
Is there an Art of Japanese rope bondage that goes back centuries, has it's
own unique techniques and history? Yes.
Is it different from Western rope bondage? Yes.
Tatu: Indeed I have
beaten my head against the wall trying to discover relevant matters to learning
the art. I know we have spoken at length about this in the past, but for
the benefit of our readers, please share with us what you feel are teh
key elements of what makes a particular bondage, Shibari or Kinbaku?
Master K: I sympathize. :)
Shibari/kinbaku is:
1. Based on the many unique tying/wrapping patterns devised over centuries
in Japan. These patterns, while refined somewhat in the twentieth century
for safety and increased erotic enjoyment, have remained relatively consistent
in look and execution for as far back as 500 years. For instance, the Ebi
shibari is hundreds of years old while the Ushirode Takate-kote, which was
adapted from hojojutso techniques to avoid neck involvement, is somewhat
more recent.
2. Tied with Asanawa (Japanese hemp rope) of 7 to 8 meters in length and
4 to 8 mm in width. This is important because the length and width is key
to properly creating the patterns both technically and visually and the material
is key because, unlike most other ropes, Asanawa does not stretch. Therefore,
the feel is unique and the pattern holds firm which is a vital safety
consideration.
3. Tied with the express purposes of creating beauty, inescapability and
erotic enjoyment. Obviously this last is the most modern purpose since Japanese
Rope Art has become so much a part of recent Japanese SM culture. However,
the concept of kinbaku-bi (the beauty of shibari Art) has a very long history
and tradition, dating back at least to the Edo period (1600 to 1868) in Japan.
Tatu: Having participated in martial arts I
understand there are time honored traditions to
learning
these skills. In your studies can you share with us any similar traditions
with Japanese Rope?
Master K: Certainly. There are classical traditions
of Japanese style rope binding that extend far back into history.
The pictorial book, Tokugawa Bakufu Keiji Zufu Kan by Shinataro Fujita published
in 1893 clearly shows how much of "modern" shibari is drawn from Japanese
history. It also shows why the teaching of hojojutso and other Tokugawa
restraining and torture techniques disappeared from the scene, for a time,
during the Meiji restoration.
In Shinataro-san's brief English preface, despite his primitive grasp of
our language, he makes it clear that the Meiji authorities were desperate
to propel Japan into the modern world and deliberately cast off everything
they could from their Tokugawa past. This included the shogun, the 250 year
old system of law enforcement and punishments, including rope binding/torture,
the entire samurai class AND all their training and techniques. Since it
was usually lower class samurai who did the hojojutso tying for Edo era law
enforcement, it's not surprising that the names of most of these people have
disappeared. And when you consider how much destruction Japan endured during
World War II, it's even easier to understand why original paper records are
few.
Still, Fujita Seiko's (no relation to Shinataro
Fujita) wonderful book on Hojojutso from the early 1900's (recently republished)
shows how many of these techniques and patterns were preserved into the twentieth
century. His is a very long book just of illustrations. Some of these techniques
are even still used by the Tokyo police today.
Certainly Shinataro-sans beautiful, pictorial, book from 1893 is a rare one
but it was republished in 1972 as Tokugawa bakufu keiji zufu honpen and copies
are readily available in libraries. My archive even owns a copy. It's from
this source and others that writers as disparate as Masami Akita, Don Cunningham
and the great martial arts historian, Nawa Yumio, have drawn their crystal
clear conclusions.
Tatu: But what about the traditions of erotic
shibari/hojojutso? Were there early teachers and traditions for this , as
well?
Master K: Yes. The erotic in Japanese style
binding began to become more prominent at the end of the Edo period. We can
clearly see this in the Art of Yoshitoshi and other Ukiyo-e artists as well
as through the themes depicted in the Kabuki dramas of that era.
However, it's important to remember that the open expression of eroticism
as far as SM
activities in Japan is concerned was a gradual thing.
Overt erotic SM took longer to surface there just as it did in the West.
It simply wasn't as socially acceptable an activity as, say, learning the
complexities of the tea ceremony or Akido. Remember, even Akido was frowned
upon as being "too traditionally Japanese" after World War II. Still, as
Masami Akita says, the "foundation" of modern SM, as far as rope binding
is concerned, is definitely to be found in the Tokugawa punishments edits
of 1742 and the techniques of hojojutso.
It was also from these histories that Ito Seiu drew his inspiration at the
beginning of the twentieth century (the 5 extant biographical books on Ito
all make this abundantly clear) and he, in turn, inspired and taught even
more modern figures like Minomura Kou, Chimuo Nureki and Akechi Denki. There
is a direct line from Edo to Ito to these modern nawashi. And all of these
people have advanced the Art of erotic kinbaku and produced articles, how-to
books, videos, recorded performances, etc., etc., that clearly show shibari
techniques drawn and adapted from history. They are the teachers and they
each have presented specific techniques for specific reasons, some erotic
and some very old.
As to where to find information and teachers here in the West, my good and
talented friend, Osada Steve insists that the only way to truly learn kinbaku
is to take lessons in Japan. He may be right about this but it's still possible
for the dedicated Westerner to learn a great deal about this Art if the right
teachers, books, videos and histories, such as those I've just listed, are
consulted.
I was asked recently if I agreed that, since "shibari" simply
means "bondage" in Japanese, couldn't anything be called "shibari" if it
looked "Japanese enough?" It sounds a silly question but it deserves a straight
answer. No, it can't. There are serious safety, style and technical reasons
why classical shibari ties are done in certain ways and with specific materials.
It's only when these are done properly that the tie should be called
shibari/kinbaku. And these techniques should be learned before one gives
way to flights of individual creative expression. For safety and Art's sake,
one needs to study what has worked in the past and why. After all, even Picasso,
that greatest of twentieth century abstract artists, was a fine representational
artist first.
You just made a great point with one of your questions that's worth remembering.
Kinbaku is based, in many ways, on martial arts techniques and, as in all
Japanese martial arts, learning the Art means understanding both the omote
waza (or surface techniques) and the ura waza (hidden techniques) that go
into creating these ties. The hidden constructions, especially as they relate
to safety issues, are why it's not a great idea to try to "reverse engineer"
shibari from photos. It takes training.
As I say, the information is out there. One just has to persevere. A month
ago you and I had a lovely exchange of mail concerning a beautiful Ukiyo-e
print you own. When we first started the discussion you knew almost nothing
about it, right? However, with serious effort, by the time we were done you
knew the artist, the date of the picture, the subject and genre of the picture,
how it was created and even something about its history. The same will be
true of kinbaku.
Tatu: Thank you so much, Sir for taking
your time to share with us something of who you are and about your journey
and understanding of the art of Japanese Rope.

Note :Master K's 1st Book is out of print,
but there are a few still floating around in
bookstores. In fact I just saw one locally at
our local AVW.
We anxiously awaite his future offerings.

Bondage Master Arisue...
not yet at the end of his rope
Jitsuwa Knuckles (May)
"What,
wonders Jitsuwa Knuckles' (May) reporter Hiroki Ishihara, are the "true
aesthetics" of 'kinbaku' (rope bondage)?
"Stated simply, to get the job done effectively, and beautifully, with a
small amount of rope," he muses. "This is the ideal. Even if you want to
repeat the same technique, the better you get at it, the less rope you need.
"When everything's going right, the feeling is so good, you get the sensation
like God has descended from heaven -- it's like the rope is running on legs
of its own. You feel like you've become one with your surroundings."
So says Go Arisue, at age 51 one of Japan's top "nawa-shi" (bondage artists),
who claims to have tied up at least 3,500 women during his 30-year career.
Arisue, who orders ropes in quantities of from 700 to 2,800 meters at a time,
was brought in to do the rope work during the shooting of SM guru Oniroku
Dan's controversial SM blockbuster film "Hana to Hebi" (Flowers and Snakes),
starring bombshell actress Aya Sugimoto.
One of between only 20 to 30 individuals in Japan who qualify for the title
of "nawa-shi," Go Arisue made his debut as a rope bondage master at age 20...."

"The Notorious Bettie Page"...
The long awaited release of the new movie about Bettie Page is scheduled
for this spring. It opened yesterday, April 14, 2006 in New York, LA and
San Francisco and will be in nationwide release over the coming weeks
and months.
Note: As of this date we have not been able to find any dates for cities
in Florida.... sigh. If anyone comes up with a date and place in south Florida
let us know as soon as you do.
Plot Summary: Page was the ultimate girl-next door, and one of the most popular
Playboy centerfolds. Page challenged the conservative 1950s, posing as a
fierce dominatrix and earning both a cult underground following .and Senate
Committee investigation on juvenile delinquency, essentially a witch-hunt
orchestrated by a senator from her home state of Tennessee bent on exploiting
her as a stepping stone to the White House. At the height of her popularity,
Bettie disappeared. But in 1979 and 1982, Page (a diagnosed schizophrenic)
tried to stab several people to death and was institutionalized.

April 15, 2006 (Ft Lauderdale, FL) - This will be Bettie Page ,Damsel
in Distress theme night for south Florida rope enthusiasts. Our special guest
will by Don aka Quietmaster (pictured left in a NYC cab with Bettie in the
early 1950's. Don was one of Bettie Pages photographers.
You have to admit, that is one cool cat next to Bettie.

Master Tatu will be doing a workshop on western styled struggle bondage.
Here is a vintage photo of Tatu at Living in Leather 1999 giving a class
on western style bondage. His hog tied damsel in distress is an international

Guest Presenter: "Mademoiselle B" from
Chicago
Mademoiselle B was entangled in her umbilical cord in the womb,
and thus began her love of bondage. Unfortunately, she forgot all about it
at birth, and didnt really remember until a few years ago but
shes made up for lost time.
She started out as a bondage bottom in a long-distance relationship, and
since he wasnt around, her boyfriend started tying her up vicariously
with him instructing and her tying and locking herself up. Pretty
soon she developed a taste for it, and started doing it on her own time;
binding and even suspending herself.
Mlle B considers herself a true switch she is now an experienced rope
top as well as a bottom and her self bondage is a way for her to be
both top and bottom simultaneously. She recommends self bondage for both
tops and bottoms; for practice, self-teaching, relaxation, physical challenge,
flexibility training, amusing your partner, and lots more

In 2000, I started something I called "Shibari South Florida". We met
in my home for a while and have met periodically since. Our numbers grew
too large for my residence and so we have now ventured out into renting space
for our workshop and social gatherings. Our next workshop will be Saturday,
February 18, 2006 in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, followed by a social time we
have named "S. I. L. K." which stands for:
"Sensuous
Intimate
Loving
Kinbaku"
Or,
Sadistic
Intimate Lascivious
Kink, depends on our
mood that night...
And sometimes we even have:
Sensuous
Unihibited
Sexy
Hot
Intimacy
If you live in South Florida, and are interested in rope, please contact

Topic "Bettie Page Damsel in Distress"
led by Tatu. In celebration of the new movie "The
Notorious Bettie Page" due to be released in late April or early May, our
group's theme will be on western-styled struggle bondage. We will have one
of Bettie Pages' photographers with us that night.
May 20 - Topic
"Self Bondage" with "Madamoiselle
B" from Chicago. I met this lady at a conference a few months back. I
attended her class. I watched her do her self bondage in the play space from
a hongtie, to a full suspension. She is amazing. She is bright and articulate
with a focus on safety for this art. We are looking forward to her
being with us.
This is going to be a very large attended event. We are going to have a number
of people with us from another support group. We are going to max out our
space at 75. So make your plans to attend now!!!
"Erotic Ropes" for your Bondage
D/s ARts & Shibari South Florida has teamed up with Sir Michael of Erotic
Ropes in Chicago to provide a quality hemp rope product to the Florida
Community. Tatu will have 30' & 15' lengths of 6mm finished hemp rope
available at SSF and other South Florida events.
Hemp rope is the traditional material used in shibari; a Japanese form of
rope bondage. It is becoming more and more popular among bondage enthusiasts.
Hemp rope is strict yet soft, it holds knots tighter with less slippage and
it doesn't stretch. Erotic ropes are created from grade Romanian twisted
hemp. Twelve hours of work go into each piece of erotic rope. Each length
of rope is washed and then dried. The rope is then oiled, boiled, dried and
singed to remove stray fibers. This process is repeated three times by a
most loving rope slut so we can offer you the finest quality twisted hemp
for all your bondage perversions.

C.A.R.E. D/s ARts is also hosting a
page for the Cincinnati Area Rope Enthusiasts, which meets once a month for
what they "Rope Rendezvous". They have been having their maximum for the

Interesting News:
From Free Speech Express
APPEALS COURT STRIKES DOWN PANDERING LAW
ATLANTA, GA -- In a 11,000 word opinion written by 5th Circuit Court Judge
Thomas M. Reavley (sitting by designation) a three judge panel of the 11th
Circuit has ruled unanimously in U.S. v. Michael Williams to overturn a section
of the 2003 federal PROTECT Act (18 U.S.C. §2252A(a)(3)(B)) which outlawed
promoting, or pandering, material in a manner that reflects
the belief, or that is intended to cause another to believe, that the
material contains illegal child pornography. Under the law, someone like
Williams could receive a sixty-month, mandatory, minimum sentence if convicted
of offering child porn on the Internet, even if he in fact was not in possession
of any actual child porn...
...Fairness under the law benefited, however, at least in the 11th Circuit,
which includes Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Suppose for example,
wrote Reavley for the panel, the government intercepts an email claiming
that attached photographs depict 'little Janie in the bath hubba,
hubba!' Does this 'reflect a belief' on the senders part that the photos
are lascivious?.... Regardless of what is actually depicted in the photos,
whether they are innocent baby-in-the-bubbles snapshots or candid stills
of the family Rottweiler in a No. 10 washtub -- regardless, in fact, of whether
any photos are attached -- this communication could be interpreted as criminal
behavior."
The logic of U.S. v. Michael Williams turned on the Supreme Courts
decision in Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition (2002), which is referenced
on almost every key point. The constitutionally dubious pandering section
in the PROTECT Act was transparently an effort by lawmakers to tweak the
language in order to try again in their efforts to dramatically expand the
reach of child porn laws, after an earlier, similar effort was struck down
(6-3) in Ashcroft v. FSC. But they didnt tweak enough. The Supreme
Court made it clear in Ashcroft v. FSC that child pornography laws must involve
the sexual abuse of actual children. What is it about actual and child that
the U.S. Congress does not understand?
Said the 11th Circuit in unambiguous language which hopefully lawmakers will
hear this time:
In the wake of Free Speech Coalition, sexually explicit speech regarding
children that is neither obscene nor the product of sexual abuse of a real
minor retains protection of the First Amendment. We believe the Courts
decision in Free Speech Coalition leaves Congress ample authority to enact
legislation that allows the Government to accomplish its legitimate goal
of curbing child abuse without placing an unacceptably heavy burden on protected
speech. From U.S. v. Michael Williams, 04-15128, 11th CircuitAnd from
